The Buffalo Nickel, or Indian Head Nickel, was circulated between 1913 and 1938. Famed sculptor James Earle Fraser designed this classic coin. The obverse of the coin is believed to be designed as a composite image of several historic Native Americans; Iron Tail, Big Tree and Two Moons among them. The reverse of the coin is believed to have been inspired by an American Bison named Black Diamond, who resided at the Central Park Zoo in New York City.
